This month is all about Shelter Dogs!

If you've been on Facebook at all this month, we're sure you've seen the posts about October being Adopt a Dog Month. At Fur Kids Foundation, we decided that we'd sponsor two lucky pooches at the City of Gillette / Campbell County Animal Shelter, 950 W. Warlow Drive.  Help us get the word out about these available dogs and share this post. Or, if you're ready to give a dog a home, consider a play date with one (or both) of these pups.
*** UPDATE: October 24, 2015 ***
Dunn has found his forever home!
Picture
Oh Dunn, there's not much you can't love about this handsome dude.  He's a 4 year old, neutered Bullmastiff mix who is up-to-date on his shots. While Dunn may not be a giant like a mastiff, he definitely has the gentle giant qualities. He's very sweet and sensitive and longs for a home to call his own. Dunn has seen his fair share of the Shelter because of his separation anxiety, so he would be best in a home with another dog to keep him company, or with someone who is home often and willing to work with his issues (there's some fun training classes in town to help with this). He also has severe food allergies, which means he will always need special food - currently the shelter is feeding him lamb and rice, and his new owners will need to watch his ears for infections, and look into the possibility of prescribed allergy medicine, which the vets in town are more than able to help you with.
***UPDATE: October 23, 2015***
Makita has found his forever home!
Picture
Makita is a 7 year old, senior Pekingese male that was found as a stray, so there wasn't much information about him at the Shelter. What is known is that he is a dignified older gentleman looking for a retirement home. Matika wants to relax on the couch, eat soft dog food, and sleep most of the day. Makita is scheduled to get neutered and will be current on his shots soon. He does have some bad teeth with one broken tooth needing to be removed, and a dental cleaning should do the trick of getting him back in tip top shape. He is incredibly loving and just wants a lap to snuggle on.

Adopting a senior dog has many rewards. Please don't pass Matika up just because of his age. We bet there are quite a few years left in this gentle guy.

You can also find a list of regional and state-wide rescues in our Adoption Resources page. And, the City of Gillette / Campbell County Animal Shelter has a list of adoptable pets on Petfinder. If you can't adopt a dog this month, Petfinder has listed some easy ways that you can help:
  1. Donate your Facebook status. Paste this message into the “What’s on your mind?” box at the top of your page: “October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month. Save a life: Adopt a dog!" and link back to the local Shelter's page: https://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelter_id=WY37&preview=1
  2. Contact a local shelter or rescue group and ask if they have a donation wish list or other flyer they’d like to you to post around your office or neighborhood. They may be holding special events for Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month which you can help promote.
  3. Share an adoptable dog or a Petfinder dog-adoption Happy Tail on your blog, Facebook or Twitter (hashtag #savedogs) page each day of the month.
  4. Sign up as a foster parent or shelter volunteer then tell your friends how great it is. Contact your local shelter or rescue group, or register in Petfinder's volunteer database.
  5. Read more ideas!

And, just to make you smile, check out this Mashable post 17 reasons a shelter dog could be your best friend. Get your smile on!

Did we leave anything out? Tell us your own ideas and please share this with your friends.
