Fur Kids Foundation 2019 Success Story: Frank

Picture
This is handsome fella is Frank, a 7-year-old golden lab / husky mix. Frank recently started to have eye issues; the eye issue is mostly due to pressure in the eye. This pressure can easily be kept at bay with some medication.

His mom, who only receives Social Security, was hoping that if she kept a watchful eye on him, his eye would get better without the medicine, and opted not to purchase it when she initially took him in because her funds were tight.

Unfortunately, Frank's eyes continued to bother him, so his mom applied for help with Fur Kids Foundation.

We were able to help cover the costs of another exam at the veterinarian to make sure Frank's eyes weren't any worse, and help get him the first round of the medication that he needs to help with the eye pressure. Now his mom knows what to expect for a cost, and can budget them into her finances.

Fur Kids Foundation 2019 Success Story: Panzer

This is Panzer, a 1-year-old German Shorthair/Husky mix. Panzer’s family has fallen on some really hard times recently.  His mom is self-employed, and his dad just recently found employment. Unfortunately, his mom became very ill and had to be life-flighted to a different state for heart surgery; and the family doesn't have health insurance. While the family was away for this emergency, a friend was watching their pets. When Panzer's family returned home, they learned Panzer had escaped the yard and somehow cut his leg open.

His family, with all of their own medical issues, were worried and unsure of what to do for Panzer. That’s when their veterinarian encouraged them to apply for help with Fur Kids Foundation for Panzer’s emergency veterinary care. We were happy to help.

Luckily after a full examination, Panzer only needed stitches for his cut. He'll be back to his active self in no time.

When it comes to cuts on animals, Fur Kids Foundation encourages people to be safe, rather than sorry: all wounds should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Wounds can seem like they are very minor; however, sometimes there is bacteria lurking below, which can cause a host of other issues.

Fur Kids Foundation 2019 Success Story: Tigger

This fine gentleman is Tigger, a 9-year-old feline.

His parents noticed that he wasn't eating as much of his food, and upon inspection of his mouth, noticed that his teeth looked awful. His mom said that she thought Tigger’s canine tooth had grown causing it to jab into his bottom jaw, which was causing him to be in pain when he ate.

At the vet’s office, the doctor let them know that Tigger's teeth hadn’t grown longer. Unfortunately what Tigger had was an abscess tooth, causing his gums to swell, which is why it appeared his canine was pushing into his bottom jaw.
According to VCA Pet Hospitals: A tooth root abscess is a severe infection that develops around the root of a tooth. A tooth root abscess forms when bacteria enter the exposed root canal of the tooth. In cats, this most often occurs when the tooth breaks and exposes the tissues that lay beneath the enamel. A tooth root abscess may also develop in association with periodontal disease, an infection of the tissues surrounding the tooth.

You can read more about periodontal disease in cats here >>>
An abscess is a severe infection, that’s very difficult for the body to fight without the help of medicine. An untreated abscess can sometimes lead to deeper and more widespread infection. Once an abscess is identified, it should be treated by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

The vet put Tigger on some medication to get rid of the infection. Once the infection is gone, Tigger will have to have his abscess tooth removed.

Please note, all cats should have a dental exam during their annual checkups, or sometimes as often as every six months.

Fur Kids Foundation was happy to help Tigger’s family with his emergency veterinary care.

Fur Kids Foundation 2019 Success Story: Willa

Picture
This beautiful old soul is Willa, and she's a 15 year-old Puggle. Willa's mom has had her since she was in the sixth grade, and she and Willa have been through a lot. Her mom says: "Willa has always gone everywhere with me, and she has always been part of our family. She has been there for me when no one else was. She was my baby before I had my baby. I truly couldn’t imagine not having her by my side every day like she has been for the past 12 years."

Willa started to act confused, was losing weight, and was urinating more than usual. Willa's mom was the caregiver for her grandma, and unfortunately her grandmother passed away. Now Willa's mom is seeking employment, and knew she needed to get Willa seen at the vet, but was very concerned what she would learn. She applied to Fur Kids Foundation for help, and we were happy to help.

At the vet appointment, it was discovered that Willa was diabetic, had a bad ear infection, and needed new food for her pancreatitis.

For those who don’t know, diabetes is a chronic disease that can affect dogs as well as cats, pigs, horses, and humans. Diabetes is a metabolism disease, which means it affects how the body converts food into energy. Diabetes can’t be cured, but it can be managed.
According to the Whole Dog Journal, the classic symptoms of diabetes in dogs are: excessive thirst; increased urination; and weight loss despite normal or increased food consumption. Acute-onset blindness resulting from cataracts can also be a sign. You can see other signs in the infographic by Lambert to the side.

According to Fetch by PetMD article: The goal for any pooch with diabetes is to keep blood sugar (or glucose) levels as close to normal as possible. This helps your dog feel good and makes it less likely he'll get diabetes-related complications, such as vision-clouding cataracts and urinary tract infections.

Willa may be 15, but she is a fighter. And we were very happy we could help Willa and her family.

Fur Kids Foundation 2019 Success Story: Nova

Picture
This beauty is Nova, a 2-year-old German shepherd. Nova decided to explore her neighborhood recently, and unfortunately was hit by a car. This resulted in some pretty serious injuries, including a severely broken leg.
Dog leg injuries are easy to identify if your dog is either limping or refusing to walk altogether. But these signs alone don't necessarily indicate a broken leg. According to VCA Hospitals, other signs that your dog's leg might be broken include intense pain, swelling at the site of the fracture, and the leg lying at an awkward angle.
If you think your dog may have a broken leg, please take him to a vet right away rather than attempting to examine or treat the injury yourself. A veterinarian can better determine the seriousness of the injury and determine whether the broken leg requires treatment.

Nova's parents work hard, and can afford Nova’s daily care and vet visits. However, when faced with an amputation or surgery, both resulting in thousands of dollars, they were overwhelmed and concerned, knowing they couldn't afford either. They applied to Fur Kids Foundation, and we were happy to help.

Nova's parents made the decision to amputate her leg. Financially it cost less than the surgery to repair the break, but also Nova's parents knew there would be a long recovery of rehab with the surgery, and potential future issues from the surgery. Nova is now an adorable tri-pawd, and hopefully will never escape her yard again.
