Fur Kids Foundation fundraisers this May help local families with emergency veterinary care
April 30, 2018—Gillette, WY--Local nonprofit Fur Kids Foundation is hosting a gaggle of fundraisers in May to help raise money for Campbell County, Wyoming families who need help with emergency veterinary care. Fundraisers include:
  1. Round Up for Pets: Residents are encouraged to swing by Dairy Queen at 2003 S. Douglas Highway in Gillette the month of May to round up their purchase to the nearest dollar, or to make an additional donation to Fur Kids Foundation. Patrons are even encourage to bring their own fur kid through the drive through and request a doggy dish, aka a complimentary small cup of vanilla ice cream. Score one of those, and the Foundation encourages folks to share it on their Facebook page! Dairy Queen will also be host to the Foundation’s second Tail Talks social mixer on Monday, May 21 from 6-7 pm. Come by and learn about the great things DQ is doing for our community, and enjoy some tasty ice cream.
  2. Ladies Night Out: Held on Thursday, May 3 from 5:30-7 pm at the Gillette College Pronghorn Center Flex Space, 3807 College Drive, Ladies Night Out is just in time for Mother’s Day. This event will feature 21 vendors offering items that are purrfect for your favorite mother, such as make up, clothing, accessories, jewelry, rustic items and so much more. Light hors d’oeuvres, goodies and beverages will be available for a donation, and attendees can participate in a 50/50 raffle and bid on items from vendors. This year the event will feature Vendor Bingo, where each attendee is given a bingo card with a square corresponding to each vendor booth. Attendees are encouraged to visit each booth to learn about their product/service and get their entire card stamped/initialed to enter to win a door prize.
  3. Pizza of the Week: Pizza Carrello is holding a Pizza of the Week fundraiser for Fur Kids Foundation from Tuesday, May 29 through Monday, June 4! Profits from that week’s Pizza of the Week sales will return to the Foundation. The featured pizza will be announced on Sunday, May 27 around 3 pm; watch the Foundation’s Facebook page for complete details.

And, stay tuned for the Foundation’s signature event, Pet-A-Palooza, happening Saturday, June 2, from 8 am-1 pm at CAM-PLEX Park Shelter No. 5. Pet-A-Palooza is an all-day pet festival held in Gillette, Wyoming that features the Fast and the FURRiest Fun Walk, Pawject Runway fashion show for dogs, the Small Dog Showdown 40-foot dog race for pups under 20 pounds, 4-H dog agility and dog demonstrations, as well as silent auction tables and pet-related products and services, and more.

As of April 30, the Foundation has granted more than $12,200 in emergency veterinary care in 2018 -- the same time last year, it had only granted $3,786. These fundraisers are how the Fur Kids Foundation raises the money needed to help local families with pets afford emergency veterinary care. Pizza Carrello has been a long-time supporter of Fur Kids Foundation, and this year they are outdoing themselves.

Not only are they sponsoring FKF’s signature event, Pet-A-Palooza, on Saturday, June 2, and being a vendor at the event (and supporting the Pooch Plunge on Saturday, August 18)...they’ve also decided to do a separate fundrasier for us in their restaurant. We’re getting our very own Pizza of the Week from Tuesday, May 29 through Monday, June 4! Profits from that week’s Pizza of the Week sales will return to Fur Kids Foundation to allow us to help families with pets with emergency veterinary care in Campbell County, Wyoming.

The pizza is dubbed the Morgan-Bella and it has roasted red pepper, pine nut, garlic and shallot pesto, topped with mozzarella, baby Bella mushrooms, and fresh basil! Don’t miss it! $11 for a personal or $20 for a large. Watch our Facebook Live to learn more about it.

Those of you who frequent Pizza Carrello know just how pawsome the owners and their staff are, but if you haven’t swung by, please make it a point to go there May 29-June 4, or swing out to Pet-A-Palooza on June 2 to enjoy their paw-tastic cuisine!

As of April 23, the Foundation has granted more than $12,000 in emergency veterinary care; the same time last year we had only granted a little more than $3,200. This support from Pizza Carrello means the world to the families with pets we’ll help in 2018 and 2019. Just so you know, more than 75% of the funds the Foundation raises goes toward our mission; something the volunteer Board of Directors is very proud to say. If you’re wanting to support FKF, please consider making a tax-deductible donation today, or contact us to host your own fundraiser on our behalf.

After working with the City of Gillette to host Pet-A-Palooza at one of their parks, there are a few more items that need to be ironed out. So, that just means that we’re holding our pet-abulous pet festival at CAM-PLEX Park Shelter No. 5!

Fur Kids Foundation volunteers are working hard to secure some pawsome vendors for you to explore, as well as merging the Fast and the FURruest Fun Walk with the event to help us celebrate all things pets! After all, the week after we hold this festival is Pet Appreciation Week, so we’re looking forward to hearing about what you appreciate most about your furry companion.

The fun walk will begin at 8:30 am (registration begins at 8 am) and then Pet-A-Palooza opens at 9 am where you can chat with some vendors, bid on silent auction items, paint a masterpiece with your pooch, watch dog demonstrations, and sign up for 4-H Dog Agility, Pawject Runway pet fashion show and the Small Dog Showdown 40-foot race for pups 20 pounds and under.

We sure hope you join us on Saturday, June 2, at CAM-PLEX Park Shelter No. 5. Learn more here

For the entire month of May, DQ customers will be asked to round up their purchase to the nearest dollar, or to make an additional donation to Fur Kids Foundation. A dollar here and a dollar there really does go a long way! We hope to see you at DQ.

Fur Kids Foundation Success Story: Callie 2018

4/15/2018

Picture
Humpty Dumpty has nothing on Callie, a 4-month-old naughty boxer puppy.

You see, Callie's mom ran into the store for a quick trip and left Callie in the truck with the window rolled down so Callie could enjoy some fresh air. But it was down just enough that little Callie could squeeze through it and jump out of the truck, which resulted in Callie breaking her leg.

Callie's mom was in a car accident and is no longer able to work, so she was devastated when she found that surgery to repair the break would be more than $1,000. She applied to Fur Kids Foundation for help. The vet said that based on Callie's age, and how the break was, she'll make a full recovery and will not have any future issues with her leg.

Broken legs in dogs are actually a common situation. If you see any of the following signs or symptoms in your dog, be sure to take them to the vet right away:

  1. Unwillingness to put any weight on the injured leg; often picking the leg up and walking as a tri-pod
  2. Refusing to play, walk or go up the stairs
  3. Unusually aggression from the dog when you attempt to touch the leg that may be broken
  4. Howling or whimpering -- this is a solid sign of pain in a dog
  5. Refusing to eat or isolating themselves away from you or the family

While Callie’s mom learned an expensive lesson about leaving a dog in a vehicle with the window rolled down, we also hope that Callie learns that staying in the car is for her benefit, too.

Fur Kids Foundation is grateful for the dedication of our volunteers and supporters who have helped local families stay happy and healthy, and together! If you would like to help Fur Kids Foundation continue to help families in Campbell County, Wyoming with animals, please consider making a tax-deductible donation. The money helps families during a time when they may not be able to afford adequate veterinary care. Check out more Success Stories.

Fur Kids Foundation Success Story: Oreo 2018

4/15/2018

Picture
This is Oreo, a 9-year-old adorable kitty, who is also his dad's registered emotional support animal (ESA). Oreo’s dad suffers from anxiety and major depression, and Oreo has been his best friend through it all.

Oreo’s dad had this to say about his feline best friend: “To many people, a cat or dog is just a pet but to me Oreo is so much more. Oreo hops in bed with me when it’s time to go to sleep he follows me everywhere. He meows at the door and cries out whenever he hears me coming home from work because he knows his best friend is about to walk through the door. I’d do anything for Oreo because I’d be so lost without him, he is everything to me and I don't want to ever see my best friend go through the pain he is experiencing."

Oreo began meowing, acting like he uncomfortable, and was walking around more than normal, and his dad knew something was wrong. When he brought him to the vet, they found that Oreo had a severe urinary blockage and infection. Oreo stayed a few nights at the vet, and was put on some intense medications, and fortunately, he was able to avoid surgery to remove the blockage.

Cats who may have urinary tract infections generally show the following signs:
· blood in the urine
· crying out while urinating
· excessive licking of the genital area
· frequent and/or prolonged attempts to urinate
· straining to urinate
· urinating outside the litter box, often on cool, smooth surfaces like a tile floor or a bathtub

Note: If you cat shows any of these symptoms, please be sure to contact your veterinarian immediately.

Oreo's dad just moved on his own, doesn't have much family in the area, and was not expecting this emergency, so he applied to Fur Kids Foundation for help. We are happy to report that he is feeling much better.
