Success Story: Henley

10/24/2016

Picture
Stories like these greatly upset Fur Kids Foundation, as we never really understand why people are cruel to animals. This is Henley, a very young kitten who was found with an injured leg, and it was later discovered that he had been shot.

Cats are masters at hiding their pain, but if your cat shows some of the symptoms below, they may have a broken bone:
  1. cry out or howl in pain or moan/groan when touched in the area that is broken
  2. refrain from walking or moving the part that is broken
  3. won’t eat or groom the area that is broken
  4. have swelling in the area of the broken bone

The vet told Henley’s family the best option for him would be an amputation.

Henley’s dad had recently been laid off from work and has been away from his family looking for work in another state; his mom is unable to work. Henley’s family was barely scraping by, so they knew the only way they would be able to help their beloved pet was to reach out to Fur Kids Foundation. We were able to help out with Henley's amputation and his mom has let us know that it was so successful that Henley never knew that he once had four legs!

Fur Kids Foundation is grateful for the dedication of our volunteers and supporters who have helped local families stay happy and healthy, and together! Success Story: Artica

Picture
Artica is a 7 month old Siberian Husky who recently broke her leg. Unsure if she jumped off a deck, or tried to play with a BBQ grill (and the BBQ grill won), Artica came inside yelping and limping; it was clear to them that she was in pain. When her parents brought her to the vet they saw that her front leg's growth bone was shattered, and the only way to help her feel better was surgery.

B
roken legs in dogs can be quite common. If you see any of the following signs or symptoms in your dog, be sure to take them to the vet right away:

  1. Unwillingness to put any weight on the injured leg; often picking the leg up and walking as a tri-pod
  2. Refusing to play, walk or go up the stairs
  3. Unusually aggression from the dog when you attempt to touch the leg that may be broken
  4. Howlng or whimpering -- this is a solid sign of pain in a dog
  5. Refusing to eat or isolating themselves away from you or the family
Artica’s family only has one source of income, and the surgery was going to be quite costly. They reached out to Fur Kids Foundation for assistance. The Foundation was able to help cover the costs of the surgery, and Artica should grow up to be a healthy, beautiful girl.

Recently, her mom told us that Artica was having a hard time staying calm, as most puppies do, but her recovery is going as smoothly as it can, she is showing very few signs of pain and discomfort.

Success Story: Buddy

Buddy is an 11 year old kitty who recently gave his mom quite the scare. When she came home, she saw that Buddy's front leg had a large gash in it and it was oozing blood. Uncertain of what what could have happened to him, and terrified he was going to get an infection, she knew she had to take Buddy to the vet.

T
he vet found that Buddy had an abscess that was infected. Abscesses are a common skin condition in cats, which often occur as a result of bites during fights but can also occur from other means, such as a cat running into a sharp object that may have bacteria on it.

Abscesses are often swollen, hot, and painful for the cat when touched. If they open, a thick yellowish discharge may be seen, and this will often have a foul smell. If an abscess does not open, the cat may become ill. In cats, an abscess is often hidden under the fur, and the first sign of illness the owner may see is that the cat is acting depressed and not eating. The cat usually has a fever. If the abscess is on a leg, the cat may limp. The cat may try to bite if the area is stroked or touched because the abscess is painful. Because of the pain, some cats may appear irritable or aggressive.

The vet thoroughly cleaned the area around the abscess and gave Buddy some antibiotics so the infection would go away.

Buddy's mom fell on some hard times, so she reached out to Fur Kids Foundation to help her cover the costs of his emergency vet visit. We recently received a message from Buddy’s mom that he’s feeling much better!

Success Story: Aldra

Picture
This is Aldra, a beautiful Savannah kitty who returned home in serious pain and greatly favoring one of her legs. When her parents rushed her to the vet, they learned that she had a broken tibia and fibula, along with a fibular dislocation -- this translates to a very nasty broken leg, and a great deal of pain for Aldra. It seems that Aldra could have been kicked by a larger animal, or possibly even hit by a car.

C
ats are masters at hiding their pain, but if your cat has broken a bone, they will most likely:
  1. cry out or howl in pain or moan/groan when touched in the area that is broken
  2. refrain from walking or moving the part that is broken
  3. won’t eat or groom the area that is broken
  4. have swelling in the area of the broken bone

Aldra's mom recently graduated from college and wasn’t working much, and her dad had recently had surgery himself and had missed a great deal of work. They knew they would need assistance with the emergency veterinary bill, so they reached out to Fur Kids Foundation for help. We are happy to say that we helped with Aldra's amputation and she's making a full recovery!

Success Story: Bacardi Rum

10/24/2016

Aaaaachhoooooooooo!

This may not have been the exact sound that Bacardi Rum was making recently when he wasn’t feeling well, but we’re sure it’s close.

For those who don’t know, cats are susceptible to upper respiratory tract infections caused by either viruses or bacteria, just like humans are. This means that their nose, throat and sinus area can become inflamed, which was why Bacardi Rum had crud in his eyes and was wheezing. Other symptoms your cat may show include:
  1. Congestion or a runny nose
  2. Cough
  3. Depression or withdrawn from usual activities (playing or hanging out with their humans)
  4. Fever
  5. Gagging or drooling
  6. Loss of or decreased interest in eating
  7. Nasal and oral ulcers
  8. Sneezing with a clear to colored nasal discharge
  9. Squinting or rubbing eyes
If you see symptoms like this in your cat, it’s important to get them to a vet for an examination. The vet can then determine if your cat requires medication, has a fever or is dehydrated. Sometimes your beloved pet may require isolation (especially from other animals), antibiotics or additional veterinary care, so it’s important to have a veterinarian look at your pet.

Bacardi Rum is a 12 1/2 year old who has been by his owner's side through thick and thin, including moving from Georgia to Gillette, Wyoming. His mom knew he was sick, but is disabled from a car wreck and unable to work, so she was worried about the cost of his care. So, she reached out to Fur Kids Foundation for assistance. We are happy to say that we were able to help Bacardi Rum receive emergency veterinary care -- he was given a full exam and sent home some with some medication and is up to his playful self.

FKF September 2016 Volunteer of the Month

Elise Buhler
The Fur Kids Foundation board of directors want to give a huge shout out to Elise Buhler as the September 2016 Volunteer of the Month!

Elise joined the Fur Kids Foundation pack in July, and she’s kept herself quite busy with us! Elise volunteered all day at Pooch Plunch and then signed up to man the Table of Treats and Trinkets at Pet-A-Palooza -- and even stayed past her shift, after having major surgery! But, that’s not all: she also signed up to help us out at Tractor Supply’s Pet Appreciation Day the Saturday after Pet-A-Palooza!

Previously, Elise has supported Fur Kids Foundation by attending some fundraisers -- most notably the Holiday Pictures with Olaf (when she brought her kitty!) and Pictures in the Park! She’s quite a promoter of these events, sending many of her friends and family members to check us out. And, now, she excitedly tells people about ALL of our events to get them to attend!

Thank you, Elise, for joining our pack! We’re so happy to have you as a volunteer. We’re always posting how pawsome our volunteers are, and we sincerely mean it. If you have seen a volunteer go above and beyond, please contact us.

FKF September 2016 Case Update

10/1/2016

In September 2016, Fur Kids Foundation had 12 families apply for assistance, and we were able to help nine families for a total of $2,587.61 given in aid. Below is some information on the cases we were able to help with:
  1. A dog we helped cross the rainbow bridge
  2. A dog who needed a biopsy
  3. A rabbit with a broken leg
  4. A dog with an ear infection
  5. A dog with a shattered leg
  6. A cat with an upper respiratory infection
  7. A cat who needed a leg amputated
  8. A cat with a bladder infection
  9. A cat with a large wound
This month shows that we are not always able to provide assistance to every family who requests help. This happens for many reasons. Sometimes the vet bill doesn’t end up being as costly as expected so the family tells us that they can pay the bill, sometimes the applicant doesn’t complete the entire application process, or sometimes the applicant exceeds our income guidelines. To learn more about our application process, please check out our Application for Assistance, and be sure to check out our Terms of Assistance near the bottom of the application. You may also call and speak with any of our Case Managers about the process at 307.363.1131 or email furkidsfoundation@gmail.com.

We are grateful for the dedication of Fur Kids Foundation
volunteers and supporterswho have helped these families stay happy and healthy, and together! When you volunteer, attend an event, or help us raise money by supporting the businesses who support us with promotions, these families are who you are helping. Thank you again for all that you do for the Foundation, and for families with pets in Campbell County, Wyoming.
