Howladay Inn Play & Stay donation 2019

We received a pawsome end-of-2019 surprise when the Howladay Inn Play & Stay contacted us today to tell us that they had a donation for Fur Kids Foundation! This will surly help us kick off 2020 to a great fundraising start.

Since they opened around six months ago, the owners collected tips from clients who used their facility, and gave the money to the Animal Shelter, Fur Kids Foundation and Rest Easy My Friend Canine Rescue and Sanctuary!

For those who don’t know, Howladay Inn offers dog boarding (as well as cat, bird, ferret, rabbit, and more), doggy daycare, and a host of services mixed in while you’re away from home. If your dog is small and the larger dogs scare them a bit, they can keep them in a separate area to ensure their safety. The owners live above the facility, so someone is always there to make sure your pet is safe. You can even schedule a secure early drop-off and late pick up if needed, which is great for shift workers.

We sure are grateful for such generous businesses in our community who love pets just as much as we do. If you do business with Howladay Inn, please be sure to say thank you to them for their support. And if you don’t, consider a tour at least; they are located at 1721 Phillips Circle in Gillette, Wyoming. Call (307) 363-3043 or check out their Facebook page. Let them know that Fur Kids Foundation sent you!

Fur Kids Foundation 2019 Success Story: Felony

12/25/2019

Picture
This beautiful pup is Felony, a 4-month-old black lab/hound. When his mom adopted him, she wasn’t aware that he had an existing neck injury. From their best guess, Felony had a deep cut that must have healed wrong, causing scar tissue to pull Felony's ears back.

For two months Felony's mom and the vet tried everything they could to fix the scar tissue and avoid surgery, but unfortunately none of it worked. Now it was time for Felony to have surgery.

Felony's mom is a single mom and the only income for her family. She depleted her funds trying to help Felony avoid surgery, and unfortunately at the same time, one of her children got really sick and also needed medical attention. When it became time for Felony to have surgery, she was worried she wouldn’t be able to afford it. That’s when she learned about Fur Kids Foundation. She applied and we were happy to help alleviate some of Felony's mom's stress.

Felony had surgery to remove some of the scar tissue from his neck, and was also neutered at the same time to help keep him healthy in the future. His vet expects him to make a full recovery.

Did you know neutering removes the possibility of testicular cancer as well as reduces the risk of prostate enlargement and infection later in life for a dog? Neutering is also believed to reduce hormone-related behaviors such as leg lifting, humping, and some forms of aggression. Fur Kids Foundation is a huge proponent of spaying and neutering dogs.  Read more about spaying and neutering in the Whole Dog Journal.

Fur Kids Foundation 2019 Success Story: Rowdy

12/15/2019

Picture
This adorable nugget is Rowdy, a 4-year-old shorkie, which is a shih tzu/yorkie mixed pup.

"Rowdy is a very amazing and loving dog, he may be a small dog but he has the heart of a lion,” says Rowdy’s mom.
Picture
Fun dog trivia: The name “Shih Tzu” means little lion, but don’t worry, there's nothing that fierce about the breed.
Unfortunately, Rowdy found himself in the middle of a large dog fight, and was badly hurt, with multiple wounds. Rowdy's parents took him to the vet as quickly as they could to have everything evaluated. The most significant wound  resulted in his stomach herniating through his ribs! Rowdy was gonna need some extra time at the vet.  And his parents were very concerned about what it would cost them.

Much like humans, dogs can experience hernias. For those who don’t know, a hernia is a condition where the contents of a dog’s abdomen pushes through a tear or hole in the muscle wall or fatty tissue. Most hernias are genetic, while some can develop due to a trauma, like a dog fight. According to PetMD, signs to watch for if your dog could have a hernia may include:
  • Swelling
  • Vomiting
  • Pain, which can be shown by panting, restlessness or not wanting you to touch a certain area
  • Frequent attempts to urinate
  • Blood in the urine
  • No interest in eating

If you suspect your dog may have a hernia, it’s best to get them to the veterinarian as soon as you can, as hernias are treated with surgery.

If you’ve ever experienced a dog fight, you know how terrifying it is; for those of you who haven’t, you’re lucky. To learn how to break up a dog fight, check out this article, and info-graphic, from The Spruce Pets.
Picture
To make matters worse, around the same time Rowdy was hurt his family was experiencing some family medical issues forcing them to travel. Everything was happening at once, causing his family to be in a tight spot financially. They applied to Fur Kids Foundation, and we were happy to help.

Rowdy had to stay overnight at the vet clinic and had to have surgery for his hernia, but he's on the road to recovery and doing well.
