The Story of Sunshine: A Cautionary Pain Med Tale for Pet Owners

Meet Sunshine, a one-year-old pup who was recently adopted from the shelter into a loving family. Sunshine's mom is a single earner and wanted a furry companion for her family. So, she adopted Sunshine, who has become their new best friend.

Sunshine was recently spayed, and in true puppy fashion, loves to explore and get into things that she shouldn't. While her mom was away, Sunshine got into the pain pills for her procedure, opened the bottle, and ate all the pain medicine. Her mom, who has budgeted for cost of living items, did not expect an emergency visit so soon. Fortunately, she was able to apply for help with Fur Kids Foundation, and we were happy to assist.

It is important to note that prescription pet medication is often flavored to make it more palatable and easy to ingest. As a result, dogs may quickly overconsume these medications if left in an accessible location. If you suspect your dog has consumed any medication, do not induce vomiting and contact your veterinarian immediately. Some symptoms of dog poisoning include abdominal pain, excessive salivation, loss of appetite and vomiting.

At the vet, Sunshine had her stomach pumped and is expected to make a full recovery. Fur Kids Foundation reminds pet owners to keep all medications, for both pets and humans, in a secure location that is not accessible to pets. It is best to store them in a locked cabinet, as pill bottles are child-proof but not dog-proof.

No matter what is happening with your fur kid, at any stage of life, Fur Kids Foundation encourages you to call your veterinarian sooner rather than later.
